As Glendale's second-largest private employer, not including retail, AAA provides hundreds of jobs at its 24-hour call center and its travel, insurance and information technology departments.
The Glendale Republic is profiling the city's top employers in an occasional series.
Not only do employees at the AAA branch dispatch tow trucks, fuel deliveries and other assistance to get members across the West back on the road, they arrange vacations for customers, provide car insurance for trips to Mexico and keep company computers at AAA offices in Arizona and California humming.
Landing AAA, which has expanded to 1,309 employees since opening in 2006 at 53rd Avenue and Bell Road, was a coup for Glendale. City officials in recent years have intensified their efforts to attract jobs.
Though the sluggish economy is a challenge - Glendale's 8.6 percent unemployment rate last year was the city's highest in at least a decade - companies in Glendale created 1,776 new positions, a 50 percent increase from the previous year.
